The Proverbs 31 Man

Just noticed that the Proverbs 31 woman gets about 2/3 of a chapter at the end of 30 and 1/3 chapters on the virtuous man.

Proverbs 31:10 “The virtuous woman, who can find?…”

What if instead of saying, “this woman is impossible to find.” The writer of proverbs is trying to make a final point to the young man that he has been trying to teach for the past 30 and 1/3 chapters? What if he is trying to say, “Who is able to find such a woman?”

The only way that you will ever be able to find this woman is if you become the kind of man that I have just spent the past 30 and 1/3 chapters describing to you.

The man who finds the woman of virtue is the same man that heeds his Father’s instruction in chapter 2, who trusts God with all his heart in chapter 3, who avoids the evil woman in chapters 5-7, who heeds the call of wisdom in chapters 8 and 9, and who finds himself, working, studying, leading, honoring, loving, thinking before he speaks, building wealth, walking by integrity, and more.

He has a good name in chapter 22. He is diligent in chapter 24. He is wise with his words, loyal to his friends, bold to confront evil, and humble before instruction. He is the one that pursues wisdom and finds her. He is the one who understands the fear of the Lord and finds the knowledge of God.

Even in chapter 31, he exercises self-control and speaks for those who have no voice. He sacrifices his life for others and finds himself in a place of authority and leadership. He is the kind of man who knows what it means to trust. He has the wisdom to lead in government and business (Pr. 31:23). He loves to build others up through his words (Pr. 31:29).

“If you are this kind of man,” Solomon is saying to his young protégé, “then you will be able to find the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31.” She is a treasure hidden from the rest of the world. Only the one who thinks that she is worth the price will take on the challenge of mastering the first 30 and 1/3 chapters of Proverbs to become the kind of man that it will take to find her.

Now that’s a challenge! [subscribe2]
